Have you heard about a piece of jewellery described as a ” Prom necklace” or “Prom Bracelet”?Pieces of vintage prom jewellery are especially prized.
Do you know that these are not a new fashion but that specialist prom jewellery has been about at least since the 1950s and probably before this? The Prom was a very big thing in the USA back then as it has become here in the last 20 years and it’s a time when every young lady wants to look her very best at the end of the school year. One way to ensure this at a reasonable price is to find genuine vintage necklace which can really help you to sparkle and shine.
What is vintage prom jewellery?
These are necklace, earrings, bracelets and brooches set with sparkling stones all over. Normally these are crystal clear and set all over into silver toned metal. The stones in vintage pieces from the 1950s and 1960s will always be made of faceted glass and set into the jewellery with prongs rather than being glued in. In the UK these are known as Diamante and in the USA as Rhinestones. Occasionally these are found in colours other than white and sometimes have an aurora borealis ( rainbow like) finish. The colourful ones are slightly later than the clear ones being from the later 1950s through to the 1960s or 70s.
The pieces are still as wearable today as they were back when they were made. These jewels should survive the rigours of the partying and then be passed onto the next generation for their Prom too. This includes earrings, many will ignore them as they have a slip or screw on fastening – don’t ignore these you can still wear them and they can be quite comfortable even if your ears are pierced.
Take a look at this vintage necklace which is typical of a quality piece which would be a great hit at a prom:
Have you seen the prices of vintage prom jewels? They are currently a great bargain and pieces can be picked up in great condition at prices which are less than new costume jewellery. The necklace for above, for example, is just £30 including postage from AntiquesAvenue.
Alternatives to Crystals for a prom
Don’t fancy a sparkling crystal set necklace or earrings, want something a little more grown up or sophisticated from you glamorous ball? I suggest a simple pearl necklace, possible vintage glass pearls as they are also very affordable. I hope you’ve enjoyed this tour of vintage prom jewellery.
